The intricate story of Rigoletto is full of Baroque contradictions as it moves along to its inevitably dark conclusion. What may be Verdi’s most popular opera uses immersive musicality to tell a story of doubt and self-sacrifice through a magnificent performance, which is the second major opera premiere of the Budapest Summer Festival this season.

The weird court jester is cynical and ruthless, but thinks he is safe as he serves the Duke of Mantova. If that wasn’t enough, he has another method of hiding his true self by masquerading as a completely different person. He uses all his energy and professionalism to fit in and accommodate, but his evil nihilism is merely a part of his job. In real life, he is the anxious father of a pure and innocent girl, Gilda – the same girl whom the Duke of Mantova has selected to be his lover without knowing the connections. Rigoletto plots vengeance. The sinister events start off with a curse which will be fulfilled through the combination of Rigoletto’s split personality and the self-sacrificial purity of the lovelorn Gilda.
This is one of the favourite performances of opera lovers everywhere with a title role that will pose a great challenge for Giuseppe Altomare, the Italian baritone who will make his debut for the Hungarian audience, while the role of the seductive Duke of Mantova will be played by one of the most important and exciting tenors of our era, the Mexican singer Arturo Chacón-Cruz.
