In 1938, exactly 80 years ago, the Budapest Sumer Festival opened the gates of its central location, the celebrated Grand Stage of Margaret Island. For this occasion, we are not only preparing an especially colourful program at the theatre. We will also greet this jubilee year with free public events in the immediate vicinity, making these quality cultural and recreational experiences available to everyone.

For this gala year’s opening event, we will move to one of the free-time spots most popular among Budapest-dwellers, the Grand Meadow of Margaret Island. That way, children, young and old alike can celebrate the anniversary with us at a free opening concert with the Hungarian State Opera House Orchestra and violin virtuoso, singer and Eurovision Song Contest-winner Alexander Rybak, who always creates a festive mood. This especially charismatic entertainer participated as a star guest at Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre’s first Virtuosos’ Festival Concert in 2016. Now he returns for the theatre’s birthday, presenting the Budapest public again with his unique performance style.

Let’s break the world record for the largest group waltz!
Within this program of the most popular dance numbers and musical works, we will attempt to break the world record for the most people dancing the waltz at the same time. We will finish by setting aglow the summer lights. Together with the participants, we will illuminate Budapest’s summer night.

The program is free, but registration is required! Those who register first will be entered in a drawing for valuable prizes!

Featuring: The Hungarian State Opera House Orchestra

Star Guest: Alexander Rybak, violin virtuoso
